There are speaking parts for 32, but these can be increased by splitting the narrator’s lines between several older children. The non-speaking parts can be increased by having as many travellers, innkeepers, angels, sheep and shepherds as you like.
If you have a small cast, speaking parts can easily be decreased to 20 by splitting the shepherds’ lines between three children and having Caesar and the innkeepers doubling up as angels, kings or shepherds. To cut down on non-speaking parts, the travellers could double up as extra angels, shepherds and sheep.
